WHAT WE DO

Young Journey programs and events provide a platform for Generation Z (iGen) to be disciplined culture changers. iGens desire to change the world as co-creators. Young Journey guides them and partners them with each other to produce world changing media content.

The primary target population is traditionally underserved boys and girls ages 9 – 18 who reside in low-income communities. Along with notable community partners, the organization also provides service to homeless women and children, veterans and military families.

IMPACT STATEMENTS
Young Journey has provided our diverse and at-risk elementary students with wonderful activities and curriculum in fine arts, self-esteem, social justice, and social emotional learning. These students gained the opportunity to gain confidence, had a supportive learning environment, and had caring role models. I've seen the impact Young Journey has had on our students, families, and community. I look forward to our continued partnership with Young Journey. ~ Raquel Abrajan, Ortega Elementay ACE Afterschool Site Coordinator, Austin, TX

The partnership with TYJF helps the Library flourish, evolve and sustain relevance in our community. Most importantly, we help support the efforts to reduce the number of "at risk" youth by providing hands-on experience in media and performing arts. ~ Michelle Cervantes, Director of the Round Rock Public Library

I have seen Young Journey grow from inception of a music cd into the impactful nonprofit organization it is today. Participants and communities across the nation benefit from Young Journey’s well structured programs and events. Participants are very engaged, take ownership of the projects and have fun learning. Many learning styles are integrated for every learner including kinesthetic learners who are very hands on and learn by touching. The curriculum also includes tools for visual learners to see the outcome in order to put things together. They learn by hearing the given instructions for the process of completing projects. Participants are able to verbalize what they are doing and clearly articulate why they are doing it. The comprehensive programs keep youth focused and on task with understanding of project concepts. With art missing in so many schools and communities, Young Journey is a vital organization to both provide media arts services directly to youth and help schools build out their current media arts programs. ~ Anthony Anderson, NYC Educator

Young Journey has been a great outlet for not only our children but our nephews as well. Young Journeys was and is a safe haven for our children to be able to express themselves artistically with their peers. They have also been able to learn how to effectively impact their community. Young Journey helped our children to break out of their comfort zone and do things that will be helpful to them and others without feeling uncomfortable. We look forward to our children continuing to grow and develop in other Young Journey future endeavors!!  ~ The Turner's (YJ Parents)

I am a proud parent of three active Young Journey participants who have significantly benefited from this awesome program. They were challenged in the best way to express themselves in writing, public speaking and technologically. Our teen has become even more proactive in his desire to initiate more study time towards his writing and coding. Young Journey has supported his interest in computers by providing access to software training course to further skills. As our preteen has constantly hoped to stand alone in her own shadow, she’s embraced the knowledge she’s learned through the Young Journey Foundation’s workshops about cameras and research that’s given her room to share her voice as she gives back to the community. Lastly, we’re so excited for our 9 year old who’s always eager to play and simply have fun. He enjoys the ability to learn how to create characters and interact with others.  ~ Metria Adams (YJ Parent)

ABOUT OUR JOURNEY

Our journey began in 2000 when the Founder, Jaha Wilder created a music CD named “Young Journey Children’s Music ”The programs grew from a music CD into school theater programs. It quickly evolved into out-of-school time media programs. The on-going digital technology programs provide youth with life skills for their critical transition into adulthood. Focus topics include education, financial literacy, healthy living, character development, digital technology and media. Productions are outreach projects that reach a worldwide audience.

Young Journey has since served over 5,000 in the New York City metro area. The organization became 501c3 in 2005 and expanded into the Central Texas area in 2014 and has since served over 5,000 in the New York City Metro Area, 350 in the Austin Metro Area and countless viewers indirectly.

The Founder's personal challenges as a teen including surviving a gunshot incident, showed her the need for all youth to know they are valuable. Her passion to help steer young people in the right direction in very strong. It is important to her that they have value for all life. Her sacrifice to help guide all youth toward educational paths for a successful life is endless. She strongly believes in giving back. The fuel that drives of her vision is that no one should ever stop learning and growing on his or her young journey.

Young Journey has opportunities for all youth from all backgrounds ages pre-K to young adults. We are committed to creating safe learning environments that inspire youth who may need extra support for a successful life. Each Young Journey experience helps young people understand life as a journey and that every choice determines their future.
